Auto Smog Checks
Our quick and easy smog inspection shop in Redding gets you in and out as fast as possible!
Smog Checks have been enforced in California since 1984 to help reduce pollution. Vehicle owners are required to go through these checks every 2 years. Laws regarding Smog Checks change often and previous exceptions do not hold up in 2019. Current Smog Check exemptions include 1975 or older gas cars, 1997 or older diesel cars, and electric vehicles.
If your check engine is on there might be an issue with your vehicle or pending code that will prevent it from passing the Smog Check. If this is the case with your vehicle, let us first diagnose and fix the issue before conducting a Smog Check. Sometimes it can be a low cost fix, other cases may be more intensive.
Speedy smog check service
At Rocha’s, we always strive to get you and your vehicle back on the road as fast as possible. Vehicles year 1999 and older take a little longer, but we’ll still get you on your way quickly.

Do I need to do an oil change?
Oil can be contaminated with small quantities of gas so we recommend an oil change before a Smog on 1999 or older vehicles. It isn’t necessary to get an oil change if your vehicle is 2000 or newer.

Smog Check FAQ
Are the results sent to the DMV?
Yes, as soon as the vehicle passes or fails the results are sent directly to the DMV.
Will my car always fail if the check engine light is on?
Yes. Unfortunately, the check engine shows you that there might be an issue with your vehicle or pending code that will prevent it from passing the smog check. The best thing you can do is get it diagnosed and fix the issue. Sometimes it can be something with a very low cost to fix in other cases the cost can rise, for example, a faulty catalytic converter.
How many times can I fail the smog check and try again?
As many times as it is necessary for it to pass.
Will my vehicle pass the smog check if I just changed the battery?
It will fail more often than not. The reason for this is that the sensors and monitors are reset when you unplug the battery, the car will need to relearn and or update the sensors and monitors. The way to fix it is simple, just drive it until it relearns all the sensors and monitors. Contrary to popular belief there is no specific amount of miles that need to be driven for the vehicle to relearn, it could be as low as 10 miles or as high as 100, it depends a lot on the vehicle.
Will the traction or Airbag lights on the dashboard prevent my car from passing the smog check?
No, the smog checks do not take that into account for passing or failing the inspection.
Do I need to do an oil change in order to pass the Smog Check?
We do recommend it for 1999 vehicles or older, it is not necessary for a year 2000 or newer vehicle. The reason for this is that sometimes the oil can have small quantities of gas mixed in it, therefore, making it contaminated.
